*Honoring Sacrifice: The "Trees of Remembrance" Project*
In 2014, as the world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, an inspiring initiative took root in Sarnia, Canada, known as the "Trees of Remembrance" project. Spearheaded by the Bluewater Area of Scouts Canada, encompassing all local Scout groups, this project sought to create a living tribute to honor the Sarnians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War. A tree would stand for each name etched on the cenotaph, preserving their memory for generations to come.
Collaboration was the cornerstone of this endeavor, with the invaluable partnership of the City of Sarnia's Park Department. The Park's Department played a pivotal role in selecting the ideal location, Heritage Park, and envisioned the profound symbolism of planting these trees in the form of a cross.
Financial support for this noble cause came from three generous sources: Union Gas, Enbridge, and the Sarnia Horticultural Society. A commemorative plaque bearing the names of the fallen soldiers was masterfully designed and manufactured by Blake Bywater. In a touching display of commitment, he and his wife, Suzanne, made a heartfelt donation of this plaque to the project.
The physical labor behind the project was driven by the enthusiasm of the community's youngest members—Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts from various Scouting groups in Sarnia. With guidance from the Parks Department and the invaluable assistance of volunteers from Enbridge and Union Gas, these resilient saplings were planted with love.
On November 8, 2014, Bluewater Area Scouting hosted a dedication ceremony at the park, marking the official unveiling of the "Trees of Remembrance."
Years later, as the original trees continued to flourish, another layer of history was added to this living memorial. The project acquired four Vimy Oaks, descendants of the legendary Vimy Ridge. Acorns from Vimy Oaks that a soldier had brought back from the battle site at Vimy Ridge were planted in Canadian soil. These hardy oaks, with their profound symbolism of resilience and growth, contributed to the ever-evolving story of the "Trees of Remembrance."
The "Trees of Remembrance" project, with its unwavering spirit of unity, serves as a living testament to the courage and sacrifice of Sarnia's heroes from the past and the enduring commitment of the community to preserving their memory. Through each planted tree and Vimy Oak, this project continues to teach the invaluable lesson that even from the smallest beginnings, greatness can flourish.
