Celebrating a Top 100 Selection with Audubon Society: A Journey Begins

I am thrilled and honored to announce my recent selection as one of the top 100 photographers by the Audubon Society (they are listed in no particular order - you will find mine at number 83) This incredible recognition sets the stage for an exciting end of summer into fall and year end journey!

The Journey Ahead

All the legs of this expedition are now booked, marking the beginning of an adventure I’ve eagerly awaited. From flights to and from Winnipeg via Air Canada booked through CAA, a flight from Winnipeg to Churchill via Calm Air, and a 48-hour VIA Rail train ride back from Churchill to Winnipeg, every detail has been meticulously planned. This journey, supported by 14 generous sponsors and dozens of additional supporters—including non-profits and other organizations—has garnered widespread attention through press releases, speaking engagements, gallery tours, and more.

Media and Collaboration

Today, I had the pleasure of completing an interview with Blake Ellis from The Petrolia Lambton Independent, sharing insights and excitement about this upcoming journey. Additionally, I am collaborating with Faith and Dylan, the Executive Director at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, to finalize the itinerary.

Preparing for the Expedition

In preparation, I’ve purchased a bulk of essential gear that will assist in documenting this expedition. A special mention goes to Frameworks Media Inc., as we aim to create a short film (approximately 20-30 minutes) to feature the expedition and all its remarkable moments. This is all dependent upon my itinerary, time available and obviously, content that I am able to capture. (I am in need of a financial backer for this project - if interested, please reach out to me).

Equipment and Generous Support

My main camera, the Canon R7, and long lens, the RF 100-500, have been sent for repairs and cleaning to ensure they are ready for the expedition. In the meantime, Mark Campbell, an amazing gentleman from London who attended my presentation at the London Camera Club earlier this year, has generously lent me his EF 70-200 L F/2.8 with a 2x extender. Paired with my old Canon 90D, this allows me to continue my work over the next few weeks without interruption.

Research and Learning

I've also delved into loads of research provided by the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, including an incredible video that I highly recommend everyone watch. Additionally, the book "Night Spirits: The Story of the Relocation of the Sayisi Dene" has been an enlightening read, offering deep insights into the region and its history.

Calendar Projects and Community Support

The 2025 Nature Calendar is nearly complete, and in the next couple of weeks, I aim to finish the 2025 Newfoundland Calendar to have them ordered by the end of August or early September. I am collaborating with a plethora of local non-profits, each of which will have its own specific code to share at events, in newsletters, on social media, and on websites. Folks can pre-order their 2025 calendar using these codes, and I will donate $5 from each sale back to the corresponding non-profit. For calendars sold without a code, part of those proceeds will be split among all partnered organizations.

Competitions and Contests

It’s also Canadian Geographic Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest time, and I’m busy submitting entries to this prestigious competition, as well as to Canon Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and the International Photography Awards (I.P.A.). Fingers crossed for some top place finishes as those are what will catapult me and my work into the mainstream!

Gratitude and Excitement

I am deeply grateful for the support and opportunities that have come my way, and I am incredibly excited about the journey ahead. This expedition promises to be a milestone in my photographic journey, and I look forward to sharing every step of the way with you.

Stay tuned for more updates and thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

With gratitude and excitement,

Shaun Antle
